US woman arrested for theft, assault after caught with suitcase in Causeway Bay

A 53-year-old American woman was arrested for theft and common assault after allegedly stealing a suitcase from a luggage shop in Causeway Bay and attacking the owner when confronted.

The 65-year-old shop owner, surnamed Ng, discovered a suitcase missing during inventory on New Year's Day at her store on Yun Ping Road. Checking surveillance footage, she saw a woman taking it the previous day.

On Thursday afternoon, Ng spotted the woman outside her shop and approached her, but the woman assaulted her, causing knee pain and a bleeding left hand.

Online footage shows a local woman pinning the suspect down on the street, shouting: "You come to Hong Kong to steal and even hit people! This is too outrageous!" The suspect stopped resisting.

Police arrested the American woman near Jardine's Crescent after receiving a report. The case is being handled by the Wan Chai district crime squad.
