A 53-year-old driver from the mainland has been summoned for dangerous driving after allegedly making a U-turn at a pedestrian crossing in Tsuen Wan.
The incident occurred on Christmas Eve (Dec 24) and has since sparked considerable concern and discussion online.
The police investigation was initiated after a video circulated on social media, showing the driver maneuvering against traffic on Yeung Uk Road, near Citywalk. As the vehicle, which bore a cross-boundary license, approached the pedestrian crossing, multiple pedestrians were seen quickly moving aside to avoid a potential collision.
One individual even resorted to slapping the side of the seven-seater to alert the driver, who ignored the warning and continued with the risky U-turn on the zebra crossing. The driver then proceeded down Yeung Uk Road toward Tsuen Wan Plaza.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident.
The footage sparked widespread discussion online, with netizens condemning the driver's reckless behavior. Some claimed that the same vehicle had a prior record of performing a similar U-turn in the middle of the road while driving on Pok Fu Lam Road.
According to the Road Traffic (Traffic Control) Regulations, the offense of dangerous driving carries a maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment, a minimum driving disqualification of six months, and a fine of HK$25,000.
