A Tsuen Wan restaurant known for providing free breakfasts to elderly residents and meal vouchers to students will close on June 30, bringing an end to 45 years of business and community service.
Kwong Fat Restaurant in Shek Wai Kok Estate announced the closure on Wednesday (Jun 24). Founded in 1981, the eatery has served generations of residents and was one of only two small independent shops that remained in Shek Wai Kok Shopping Centre following a major renovation several years ago.
Beyond serving as a neighborhood gathering place, the restaurant operated an academic achievement incentive scheme for students attending secondary schools in Kwai Shing Circuit and Shek Wai Kok Estate. Students who ranked among the top three in their class were awarded HK$100 dining vouchers.
The eatery also supported community initiatives by providing its premises free of charge for workshops organized by charitable groups serving underprivileged residents.
For years, it has distributed free breakfasts to elderly residents in the district on the 15th day of every lunar month. Despite its impending closure, the restaurant said it would carry out the initiative one final time at 9am on June 29 before closing for good the following day.
The announcement prompted an outpouring of nostalgia online, with many patrons recalling the restaurant's signature satay beef dish and longstanding presence in the community.
