The northern section of Shenzhen Metro Line 13 Phase I went into operation on Sunday, marking the completion of the full-line opening of the first phase, according to the MTR Corporation.
As an important railway in the central-western part of Shenzhen, Line 13 features 16 stations, including six interchange stations that connect passengers to several other metro lines.
The opening marks the second metro line in Shenzhen which the MTR is involved in the operations.
Launched in 2024, the first section of Line 13 Phase I has been a critical transit link for core areas such as Shenzhen Bay Port, Houhai Central District, and the Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park.
Highlighting the proximity to Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint, the corporation noted the railway will serve both Hong Kong and Shenzhen travellers with an efficient cross-boundary connection.
The newly opened northern section adds nine stations, linking Hi-Tech North Station to Shangwu Station. However, the Xili High-Speed Rail Station will open at a later date, pending the completion of a major integrated transportation hub in the area.
Sammy Wong Kwan-wai, Chinese Mainland Business Director of MTR Corporation, expressed honor in the company's role in operating Line 13, which he described as an important railway contributing to the vision of a “Greater Bay Area on the Rail.”
Wong emphasized MTR's commitment to promoting urban advancement and exploring new business opportunities, while integrating international operational management experience with Shenzhen’s unique urban characteristics.
Through close collaboration with industry partners and stakeholders, he stated the company aims to support the continued development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The MTR Corporation currently participates in the operations of two metro lines in Shenzhen: Shenzhen Metro Line 4 operated by the Corporation’s wholly-owned subsidiary MTR Corporation (Shenzhen) Limited, and Shenzhen Metro Line 13 Phase I operated by MTR CREC Metro (Shenzhen) Company Limited, a joint venture company through a PublicPrivate Partnership.
In addition to the northern section of Line 13, three other new sections of the Shenzhen Metro commenced operations at 10.18am, including the western extension of Line 5, Phase III of Line 8, and the Hongling South section of Phase II of Line 11.
According to local media reports, these four new sections will expand Shenzhen's total rail transit network to 634.5 kilometers, encompassing a total of 441 stations.
