Police have arrested a 54-year-old man and seized drugs valued at over HK$6.2 million during an anti-narcotics operation in Tsing Yi on Saturday night.
The arrest came at around 11pm on Container Port Road South when officers intercepted the suspect at an open-air car park.
According to the police, officers observed him opening the trunk of an abandoned vehicle, where officers later found four packets of ketamine—each weighing about one kilogram—and two bricks of cocaine weighing a total of 2.2 kilograms.
The suspect was later escorted to another parking lot on Tsing Yi Road, where police found an additional 4.3 kilograms of ketamine inside another abandoned vehicle.
In total, officers seized around 10 kilograms of suspected cocaine and ketamine with an estimated street value exceeding HK$6.2 million.
Police said the arrested man, who is unemployed, is believed to have been lured by drug trafficking syndicates to commit the crime in exchange for quick cash.
He has been charged with two counts of trafficking in dangerous drugs and will appear at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday.
Police said the operation successfully prevented the batch of drugs from entering the local market, warning that drug trafficking is a serious offence.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, anyone convicted of the crime faces a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million fine and life imprisonment.
