From cigarettes to cuffs: Smoker’s outburst forces police response at HK airport

A black-clad man caused a disturbance at Hong Kong International Airport in the early hours of Thursday, openly smoking in the arrivals hall before hurling abuse at security and forcing police to intervene with riot shields.

The incident, captured in viral videos posted on Threads, showed the man aggressively puffing on a cigarette while taunting airport security.

Witnesses described the scene as "the entire airport was shaken" as the man shouted obscenities, including, "Go ahead, call for backup, motherf*****!"

Dramatic standoff sparks police intervention

Footage from onlookers revealed the man gesturing wildly and moving erratically as he confronted staff.

Police were called at 3.29am and arrived with riot shields, eventually subduing the suspect after he briefly resisted.

Police said the local man, 26, was later escorted away and taken to North Lantau Hospital for evaluation. The force classified the case as "mentally disordered persons found."

Social media users reacted with a mix of shock and frustration.

Some speculated whether the man was under the influence of drugs, while others condemned his indoor smoking.

"These troublemakers never learn until they face real consequences," one commenter lamented.
