MTR has named Jeny Yeung Mei-chun, its managing director for transport services in Hong Kong, as the new chief executive officer, following a global selection process.
The 60-year-old will start her three-year term on January 1 next year, becoming the company’s first female CEO, replacing the outgoing Jacob Kam Chak-pui.
Yeung joined MTR in 1999 and has served in various roles such as commercial director from 2011 to 2021, and Hong Kong transport service director in 2021.
The MTR described her as instrumental in expanding the station retail and advertising businesses, enhancing customer experience and leading digital transformation and the
adoption of technology to promote smart mobility and smart asset management.
She is currently the non-executive chairman of Octopus Holdings Limited and
two of its group companies, and formerly chairman of Ngong Ping 360 Limited.
As the CEO, Yeung will be responsible for all performance of the company and its group companies, both in and outside Hong Kong.
She thanked the board for its trust and the MTR team for their continuous support.
“With a humble heart, I look forward to building on the Corporation’s strong foundation to serve Hong Kong and the cities where MTR operates, and to continue creating value for the society and all our stakeholders.”
Noting that the new era of artificial intelligence looks set to further accelerate this transformation, MTR chairman Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen expressed confidence in Yeung’s strong “vision and capability.”
Auyeung also thanked Kam for his contributions, having led the railway company in overcoming challenges of the pandemic and returning the business to normality.
Kam said he is honored to have taken part in and witnessed the growth of MTR, and expressed hope that the MTR will continue reaching new milestones.
Lawmaker Michael Tien Puk-sun, who was the chairman of former rail operator KCR before its merger with MTR in 2007, approved of Yeung as the corporation’s new CEO.
Tien considered Yeung a “prudent” person who has “considerable courage.” He also praised outgoing Kam as the best CEO the MTR had in years.
