The ex-McDonald's employee, who slashed his manager after an argument, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison at the High Court on Thursday.
The 31-year-old defendant, Chan Chi-shing, attacked his manager, Wong Wut-san, with two cleavers he grabbed from a nearby meat stall at the fast-food chain's Sai Ying Pun branch in 2023.
The court heard that Chan has been criticized for unsatisfactory performance before returning to the restaurant for duty instead of reporting to the Admiralty branch, where he had been working for weeks.
Chan left silently after being questioned for showing up at the wrong branch and criticized by the manager for his poor performance. He later returned and slashed Wong's head and neck with knives.
The judge emphasized the severity of the victim's injuries and rejected the defendant's claim of acting under provocation.
The injured manager was at one point in critical condition after sustaining a fractured skull in the attack, while updated reports revealed that Wong was still suffering from serious disabilities and depressive symptoms.
