The HKUMed Community Pharmacy aims to assist with minor ailments rather than stripping doctors of their patients, as well as to guide external pharmacies on managing various patient cases, emphasized Ian Wong Chi-kei, a professor of Pharmacology and Pharmacy Department of University of Hong Kong.
Wong noted that citizens in other parts of the world, like the United Kingdom and the United States are strongly encouraged to manage minor health issues like colds and allergies, with pharmacists providing support.
He stated that many hospital admissions stem from poor medication adherence and that the Community Pharmacy can help improve this by facilitating direct communication with pharmacists.
The professor also mentioned ongoing discussions with the District Health Centre for collaboration, noting that patients not needing to see a doctor can reduce the burden on the medical system.
Wong quoted Commissioner for Primary Healthcare Pang Fei-chau, stating that the Hospital Authority may refer patients to community services in the future.
HKUMed Community Pharmacy is currently collaborating with family doctors who refer patients to the pharmacy for medication monitoring, ensuring a coordinated approach to patient care.
The Community Pharmacy was launched on November 11, marking the first of its kind situated within a university.
