The Hong Kong Toilet Association has named a public toilet in Pak Shek Kok as the best in Hong Kong, with its well-lighted design and use of technologies making it stand out from the rest.
The association inspected around 300 public toilets in the city's 18 districts, evaluating them based on criteria of comfort, accessibility, safety, and hygiene.
The gold award went to the Pak Shek Kok public toilet located in Tai Po’s Hong Kong Science Park.
The association said the toilet has a glass roof with ample natural lighting, along with walls adorned with plants. It is also equipped with a smart toilet system, including phone charging facilities, and has separate handwashing stations and drinking water facilities, making it convenient for visitors to use.
The silver award went to Ma Liu Shui Waterfront public toilet. The association said that the washroom remained clean and tidy even though it was frequently used, commending the management of the facility.
Meanwhile, Hoi Ning Street public toilet received the bronze award for its newly refurbished facilities, along with the greenery inside the washroom.
Separately, two public toilets - one on Catchick Street in Sai Wan and the other at Sai Ying Pun Market - were deemed to be in urgent need of improvement, according to the association’s annual public toilet rating.
It noted that the toilet in Sai Wan have slippery floors and its facilities, such as the water pipes and hand dryers, were in bad condition. As for the toilet at Sai Ying Pun Market, the men’s washroom had only one cubicle and was out of service on the day the observers arrived.
The association called on authorities to make improvements to the toilets to prevent accidents from happening.
The association also said that public toilets in Hong Kong should not be managed by three government departments that hold different standards for maintaining them.
