Police rolled out more details regarding the pursuit on Princess Margaret Road on Saturday morning, where two officers shot a car once to subdue and arrest the 25-year-old driver. Eighty bags of cocaine valued at about HK$60,000 were later found inside the vehicle.
Addressing the media in the afternoon, Superintendent Alan Chung from the Kowloon West crime headquarters said the car was traveling towards Tsim Sha Tsui on Waterloo Road near Lion Rock Tunnel around 11 am.
A citizen recognized the car’s license plate but found it weird that his friend did not drive it. He then phoned his friend, who filed the police report.
About 10 minutes later, police successfully located the car on Princess Margaret Road near Hung Hom Police Station. Officers intercepted the vehicle and gave multiple verbal warnings to the driver, who refused to exit the car.
The driver reversed the car and hit another private vehicle behind, and then a traffic cop drew his pistol to protect himself and other road users, Chung said.
The cop gave another verbal warning, but in vain; he shot and hit the door on the car’s right-hand side.
Yet, the driver hit the gas and crashed into the police vehicle in front of it. A sergeant also drew his pistol and gave another verbal warning that the driver ignored. The sergeant then shot and hit the back door on the car’s left.
As the car further hit a taxi in the front and the fence railing by the roadside, officers swiftly subdued the driver. They also searched the vehicle and found 80 bags of cocaine worth HK$60,000.
The driver, a 25-year-old man named Lee, had a criminal record and was a member of a triad society. He was arrested for trafficking in dangerous drugs, driving without a license, dangerous driving, driving without third-party insurance, and using false documents, Chung said.
He added investigations revealed the involved car had been missing in Yuen Long in March. A police investigation is ongoing, and the case is now handled by Kowloon West regional crime squad.
