Water was seen springing up to over 10 meters in the air after an underground pipe on Pok Fu Lam Road broke and burst open a ditch cover in the early hours on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 3am outside Haking Wong Building of the University of Hong Kong.
The driving lanes were flooded with water as well as sand and other residues, while drivers were forced to slow down and switch to an adjacent lane.
According to videos on the internet, a taxi that encountered the "water fountain" during the incident was seen being indecisive about what to do. Yet, after a van behind honked several times, the taxi went straight through the "water fountain" and earned a free "car wash."
Staffers from the Water Supplies Department later arrived at the scene to fix it and turned on the water brake at around 6am.
