The attack was reported to police by staff at the Royal Plaza Hotel on Prince Edward Road West early yesterday.
It is understood the couple, on a pleasure trip to Hong Kong, had planned to visit Disneyland on Monday. But the man, 28-year-old Hsu, overslept until into the afternoon.
His 20-year-old girlfriend, Tseng, was so furious she gave him the cold shoulder for the rest of the day, and they had dinner separately.
A fierce quarrel appears to have broken out after Tseng returned to the hotel room after drinking.
She allegedly waved a razor and then slashed Hsu on his back, with wounds three to five centimeters long.
Tseng, who remained emotional, later attempted to cut her wrists, but hotel staff had become aware of the trouble and called police at 3.53am with the message a guest was attempting to commit suicide.
The initial message from police was that "during a quarrel on relationship issues the female attempted suicide with a razor. The male was injured when trying to stop her."
In any event both were found to have been wounded by sharp weapons and were sent to Kwong Wah Hospital.
Tseng was later arrested for wounding, with police classifying the case as wounding and attempted suicide.
