Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of State Council published a commentary under the pen name "GangAoPing," stating the open, transparent and competitive race further enriched Hong Kong's high-quality democracy under patriots administering Hong Kong and showcased the new electoral system's strengths.
The commentary said both candidates focused on leveraging Hong Kong's "one country, two systems" advantage, aligning with the national 16th five-year plan and integrating Hong Kong into national development, demonstrating broad vision.
It noted the close race reflected vibrant democracy, with both having extensive Legco experience and recognition. The process followed legal nomination and debate procedures, with lawmakers voting anonymously and counting closely monitored.
The commentary said the election's success resulted from fully implementing patriots administering Hong Kong and the new electoral system, proven since its 2021 improvement. The system balances overall, sectoral and district interests, better reflects public opinion, fosters rational and pragmatic discussion, ensures governance is firmly in patriots' hands and safeguards residents' democratic rights and well-being. It also ensures steady "one country, two systems" practice, promotes executive-legislative interaction, improves governance and unites forces for coordinated development.
It expressed hope the new president will guide Legco in upholding the executive-led system, supporting the chief executive and government, engaging communities and industries for high-quality deliberation and legislation, and implementing the code of conduct to show a new spirit.
