Legislative Council President Starry Lee Wai-king on Monday reiterated the importance of positive interaction between the executive and legislative branches following her attendance at a symposium hosted by the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies.
In a social media post, Lee said Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, delivered a speech that provided guidance for the work of the new-term Legislative Council.
She said all lawmakers agree that the executive-led system has long proven effective, as it suits Hong Kong’s actual circumstances and needs, and aligns with the overall interests of both the country and the city.
While its implementation has not always been smooth, Lee said practical experience has shown the system to be resilient and capable of helping Hong Kong seize opportunities and respond flexibly to challenges.
She pledged that the Legislative Council will fully support the chief executive in governing according to law, enable positive executive-legislative interaction to play a greater role, and proactively integrate into the country’s overall development.
Lee added that lawmakers have arranged a study session to review the symposium’s content in order to better fulfill their constitutional functions.
The Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies was established in Beijing in 2013 under the administration of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council.
It aims to organize and coordinate research on the theory and practice of “one country, two systems,” and to strengthen academic exchanges and cooperation among Hong Kong, Macau, and the mainland in related fields.
