A driver’s unexpected announcement
A commuter in Hong Kong recently witnessed a rare and heartening scene during a bus ride.
Upon boarding, the driver announced that both electronic payment machines—for Octopus cards and credit or e-payments—were broken. “Just get on, no need to pay,” he told passengers.
But what happened next surprised everyone.
Passengers step up—voluntarily
Instead of taking a free ride, passengers began asking the driver for the cash fare amount.
Those with coins and bills readily paid. Those without were quickly helped by others nearby.
Some offered to cover a stranger’s fare with a casual “you can pay me back tomorrow.” Others helped break large bills or pooled change together.
Not one person left without paying.
A culture of self-discipline
The driver hadn’t asked for payment—it was entirely self-initiated. The incident delayed the bus slightly, but the original poster called it a “high-quality event” worth waiting for.
The story resonated widely online, with other bus drivers chiming in to share similar experiences.
One part-time driver recounted a time they were forced to operate a fare-free service due to a broken machine.
Partway through the journey, the machine started working again.
"Without anyone asking, about 70 to 80 percent of the passengers came up to tap their cards," the driver wrote. "One passenger did it silently; others heard the sound, and then many people, one after another, even coming down from the upper deck, came to tap their card before getting off."
Netizens in the comments overwhelmingly agreed with the positive assessment of the city's character. "The high quality and self-discipline of Hong Kong people is no joke," one wrote. "It's true, Hong Kong people really dislike the feeling of owing someone or taking advantage of them," said another, with a third simply stating, "Really, only Hong Kong people are of such high quality!"
