The True Light School of Hong Kong, located in Tai Hang, is commemorating a significant milestone as it celebrates the achievement of its first student to attain the highest grade of 5** in six subjects.
The 18-year-old top scorer, Caron Fung Yuet-kiu, has achieved perfect scores of 5** in Chinese, English, Mathematics, Biology, Economics, and Geography. She intends to study in environmental policy and sustainable development at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Despite initial concerns regarding her performance in Chinese, Biology, and Economics, Fung expressed a blend of surprise and elation upon receiving her examination results.
Childhood passion for the environment
Fung revealed she has had a long-standing interest in environmental issues since childhood, recalling memories of hiking with friends and family, as well as conducting water quality tests, fueling her passion for environmental protection.
The movie "Interstellar" was another inspiration for her, "I don't want to be the old man in the film talking about how beautiful the Earth once was," Fung said.
Relieving stress through anime
Regarding her exam preparation, Fung noted that her family allowed her to find her own rhythm without much interference.
Fung mentioned experimenting with different timetables, including waking up at 4am and going to bed at 9pm.
After studying for around 8 to 9 hours a day, Fung indicated that she set time to relax by reading novels or watching videos, and anime, joking that she rewatched some to help maintain focus.
Fung revealed her study secret by emphasizing the importance of familiarizing herself with the test content before practicing exam papers, adding that staying relaxed is crucial.
Family support
Fung's parents were surprised by her results, which they attributed to her hard work, noting that they plan a celebratory dinner.
Fung's mother underlined the importance of proper rest during her exam preparation, often encouraging her to take breaks.
Praising Fung's independence and clear goals, her father expressed commitment to support her studies abroad, regardless of the scholarship application outcome.
A 90th anniversary gift
Principal Hui Tuen-yung commended Fung for her humility and willingness to assist her classmates, describing her as having "a light within" and a readiness to explore new opportunities.
Hui remarked on Fung's achievement as a gift for the school's 90th anniversary, believing it will inspire other students to realize that hard work leads to success.
