Cantopop star Jacky Cheung Hok-yau's concerts in Dongguan have been postponed to August as the dates coincide with the national college entrance examination in the mainland, also known as Gaokao.
The three-day concerts were initially scheduled for June 6 to 8 at the Bank of Dongguan Basketball Center, which overlapped with some dates of the Gaokao.
Some parents expressed concerns that the venue is just two kilometers away from one of the exam centers, which could potentially disrupt examinees and traffic in the area and urged the government and related parties to reschedule the concert.
The organizer backed down and postponed the three concerts to August 29 to 31, citing that the decision has been made to ensure a thoughtful balance between cultural events and societal responsibilities.
The organizer apologized for the inconvenience caused and guaranteed that the costs incurred from the hotel, flight, and train ticket cancellations would be compensated.
Apart from Jacky Cheung, the concerts of singer and songwriter G.E.M. in Changzhou, Jiangsu, as well as veteran Cantopop singer Alan Tam Wing-lun in Huizhou, Guangdong were also rescheduled due to the public examinations.
