Headquartered in Hong Kong with production facilities in Dongguan, China, Saicome excels in Original Design Manufacturing (ODM) and Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) projects, such as rechargeable battery systems, DC power tools, garden tools, pet tools and home appliances. With its robust R&D expertise, the company collaborates closely with international clients to deliver innovative solutions, earning a strong reputation in the industry.
Established in 1990, Saicome has undergone a remarkable transformation from a humble assembly line at its commencement into an internationally renowned manufacturer of electrical appliances with products sold to over 30 countries worldwide.
“Quality management plays a key role in establishing a good, solid corporate culture that paves the way for smooth operations, continuous improvements, and rapid response to technological developments in an ever-changing market,” says Brian Wong, Operation Director of Saicome Industries Ltd.
Saicome has managed to achieve high standards of quality using practical, straightforward, easy-to-implement, but effective methods, always bearing in mind the importance of user-friendliness. For example, documents on quality systems are printed on a special green colored paper, so that staff at every level will know at a glance that this document is about quality control and procedures. Another example is by using different colors for different areas, and different colors for different products. For higher management levels such as business development and engineering, professional methods such as Gantt charts and SWOT analysis are used.
Based on its corporate philosophy of “Doing the best”, Saicome has nurtured a strong corporate culture of unity and dedication among its staff. In its unrelenting pursuit of excellence, Saicome has put its quality systems to the test, subjecting them to annual reviews by reputable organizations, including ISO, BSCI and ESG. The feedback from these comprehensive ‘body-checks’ by industry leaders provides helpful advice from multi-faceted perspectives to enhance quality management. The conferment of the HKMA Quality Award is a vindication that the company is advancing on the right track.
Knowledge-based management boosts market competitiveness and innovation capabilities
In winning the HKMA Special Award for Small Enterprises and Start-ups, Wong attributes the achievement to their perseverance in transforming the company into a knowledge-based enterprise. As a Hong Kong SME operating for more than 30 years, it has weathered many challenges, including organizational aging, severe competition in the industry, rapid market changes, geopolitical and economic uncertainty, shortage of talent and rising costs, among others. “A major factor that has helped us overcome these challenges is by continuously upgrading the quality of our workforce,” Wong explains. After years of dedication, their efforts have paid off.
Currently, 42 percent of the company’s employees have university and professional degrees, with 25 percent having a Master’s Degree. These highly-educated talents form a strong base for the company to continue innovating and bolstering its market competitiveness.
With less resource than large corporations, SMEs, especially those in the manufacturing sector, face difficulty in attracting talents. On the other hand, SMEs benefit from a simple and flexible structure whereby staff can gain a comprehensive view of their work and can easily integrate into the team.
Saicome uses a buddy system that pairs experienced staff with new recruits. During orientation, information on the company and the industry are clearly communicated to new staff who are given the space and freedom to release their potential.
At Saicome, the average employee tenure exceeds 13 years, thanks to a corporate culture that creates a stable and positive working environment, and a management that supports work-life balance through flexible work arrangements and extra days-off.
Keeping abreast of the latest technology and best business practices
Siacome captures the benefits of technological advancements through increased investments in automation, from R&D in software, automated production equipment to the use of AI. Impressive results have been obtained, with an 80 percent reduction of manpower in some production models and a defective rate of as low as 0.2 percent.
The company has jointly developed products with over 50 renowned brands, with a shining example being its newest lithium battery box which has incorporated digital technology. It also collaborates with academic institutions and universities to offer students insights into industry practices and innovations.
In 2006, Siacome joined the Business for Social Responsibility Initiative (BSCI), and in 2022, it cemented its commitment to sustainable business practices by joining the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) program.
The company implements ESG in a step-by-step manner, instead of using indicators as rigid benchmarks. First and foremost, it meets the standards stipulated by local laws and regulations including working environment safety, waste emissions and air quality. Having been certified to meet these standards for years, other benchmarks have gradually been added, such as reducing electricity consumption and the use of papers and consumables, achieving a reduction by more than 20 percent.
Employees at all levels are encouraged to be part and parcel of corporate governance. For example, its internal affairs committee is attended by representatives of every department to manage daily issues. The company has also signed the Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption’s Business Integrity Charter, and has included the company’s suppliers into the Charter.
Quality management will always remain at the heart of Saicome’s success, reflecting not only the company’s commitment to excellence, agility and resilience, but also first-class products and happy, satisfied customers.
