The Observatory said Koinu has been upgraded to typhoon status this morning and expects to intensify into a Super Typhoon on Thursday (Oct 5).
The weather watchdog said Koinu was centered about 840 kilometers northeast of Manila at noon and is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometers per hour toward the vicinity of the Luzon Strait to the southern part of Taiwan and intensify gradually.
According to the Observatory, Koinu will reach Severe Typhoon status on Wednesday (Oct 4) and Super Typhoon status on Thursday. It expects Koinu to reach the southern part of Taiwan as a Severe Typhoon before weakening and entering within 400 kilometers of Hong Kong as a Typhoon this Friday (Oct 6).
According to the 9-day weather forecast, it is expected to be mostly filled with showers in the coming days, with the occasional sweltering weather in the mornings from Wednesday to Friday.
Besides, another surge of the northeast monsoon will reach southern China in the middle and latter parts of this week, which might affect Koinu’s subsequent movement and intensity.
