A truck collided with a JR passenger train at a level crossing in Nemuro, Hokkaido on Monday morning, injuring multiple people including four Chinese citizens.
The single-carriage local train on the JR Hanasaki Line, traveling from Kushiro to Nemuro with 16 passengers, struck the truck at the Hattaushi level crossing at 8.21am local time.
The truck driver was seriously injured and taken to hospital. Several passengers on the train sustained injuries from the impact. Firefighters cordoned off the scene for firefighting and rescue operations.
The Chinese consulate-general in Sapporo said it would provide consular protection and assistance to those affected as needed.
JR Hokkaido announced service suspensions on parts of the line. Operations are halted between Attoko and Bettoga stations. Two other services are partially suspended between Nemuro and Kushiro stations.
