Hong Kong’s wushu athlete Cheung Yat-lam clinched a silver medal in the men’s 70kg Sanda event at the Chengdu World Games, marking the fifth medal for Team Hong Kong at this year’s competition.
The 24-year-old athlete, making his World Games debut, narrowly lost 1-2 in a hard-fought final against his South Korean opponent, securing Hong Kong’s best-ever result in the wushu category at the event.
Cheung displayed remarkable skill and determination throughout the tournament, defeating competitors from the Czech Republic and Chinese Taipei to advance to the final.
In the gold-medal match, he faced a tough challenge, losing the first round 0-5 before bouncing back to take the second round 4-1. However, the South Korean fighter regained control in the decisive third round, winning 5-0 and claiming the title.
The Hong Kong Sports Federation & Olympic Committee extended its congratulations to Cheung and the wushu team for their outstanding achievement.
Wong Po-kee, the delegation's chef de mission, praised Cheung’s performance, noting that the young athlete demonstrated explosive power, precision, and agility in his debut World Games appearance.
He said Cheung showcased a perfect blend of speed, power, and accuracy while effectively utilizing offensive and defensive tactics.
“This medal once again proves the exceptional talent of Hong Kong athletes on the international stage.” Wong said.
