A 62-year-old Hong Kong man has been detained for three days for harassing a female diner at a sushi restaurant in Guangzhou, mainland authorities said.
The Tianhe District branch of the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau said the incident occurred on March 14 at a restaurant on Tianhe Road, where the man repeatedly approached a woman seated nearby and touched her head, shoulders and back despite her objections.
Police said the conduct constituted “unprovoked harassment” and was supported by evidence including the victim’s account, witness statements and video footage. The man is being held in administrative detention from March 18 to March 21.
According to mainland media, the case drew attention after the woman described the incident on social media, saying the man initially tried to strike up a conversation before making unwanted physical contact. She said she told him to stop and pulled away, but he continued.
Video circulating online shows the pair arguing, with the man questioning the woman in Cantonese and the woman responding in Mandarin, asking why he touched her.
Witnesses later said they were willing to provide footage and testify if needed.
The restaurant apologized for failing to intervene promptly, saying staff assisted the victim in reporting the case and have since strengthened training and adjusted seating arrangements to better protect diners.
