In a statement issued on Thursday, the organizers said they were “deeply saddened” by the tragedy and extended their “heartfelt condolences” to affected residents and families who lost loved ones. They stressed that the annual music awards, which involve “the long-term passion and dedication of countless artists, staff, and fans,” would continue as planned, citing a belief in the “healing and unifying power of music.”
To reflect the somber mood, the event will scale back elements of its production. The red carpet segment has been canceled, while the main ceremony will be broadcast live. Organizers said performances would be “carefully and thoughtfully prepared with restrained production,” aiming to offer “small moments of courage and comfort” to the city.
A moment of silence will be held during the show, and donations will be made to support families affected by the fire. This year’s awards will also center around the theme “Support Hong Kong,” which organizers described as an effort to provide positive energy and solidarity during a difficult time.
“We hope that music can unite us as one and provide the courage and strength to move forward together,” the statement read. “Our thoughts remain with Hong Kong during this difficult time.”
The decision comes as the city continues to mourn the deadly blaze, which has drawn widespread concern and prompted questions over fire safety in older buildings.
The organizers emphasized that while the celebration of music would continue, the tone of the evening will reflect the collective grief of the community.
The 2025 MAMA Awards will take place on Friday and Saturday.
