A suspended public school in Cha Kwo Ling built in the Streamline Moderne style - seen in its current state in both pictures to the right - is of crucial importance and should be preserved, NGO Docomomo Hong Kong has urged. Sze Shan Public School was founded in 1952 as the only government-aided primary school in Cha Kwo Ling and it was closed in 1993 due to insufficient student enrollment. An old photograph of the school is seen, bottom right. The two-story high public school has curvilinear features on the facade of the central entrance block and cantilevered sunshades on each floor emphasizing the horizontality of the building, the group said.Internally, the main staircase is beautifully crafted with a curved profile and the banister is decorated with light green terrazzo - a similar feature to the revitalized Central Market, below.PHotos: Sing Tao
