Sole candidate for CUHK leadership awaits appointment decision today

The only candidate recommended by the Chinese University's principal selection committee, Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, met with hundreds of university council members, teachers, and students yesterday to introduce his vision and work plans for the presidency and vice-chancellorship.

CUHK council member and lawmaker Edward Lau Kwok-fan said that Lo, the current associate dean of the university's medical school, has the passion needed to lead the university's reform.

Lo participated in three exchange sessions lasting 1.5 hours each, where he engaged with students, staff, and alumni. In the first session with almost 100 attendees, he said he introduced himself for 20 minutes, saying that he was born and raised in Hong Kong, had a deep interest in science - particularly biology - and had received numerous awards.

Lo said he is committed to focusing on the development of artificial intelligence if elected president. When a student inquired whether he would defend academic autonomy under the national security law, Lo asserted that academic freedom is a fundamental tenet and he would uphold it in accordance with the law.

Students expressed concern about the university's handling of potential violations of the national security law by students or staff. In response, Lo said it is crucial to conduct academic and scientific research in alignment with relevant legislation, emphasizing that there is minimal risk of crossing the "red line" during normal academic activities.

Regarding reports of individual teachers being dismissed for political reasons, Lo said CUHK has established procedures for handling personnel matters, and as president, he would ensure these procedures are followed.

He also said he would review the current access control measures on campus.

Lawmaker Lau said he believes Lo, who has been with CUHK for 27 years, is familiar with the university's situation and the challenges it faces. "I believe Lo is capable of leading CUHK to a fresh start with his extensive teaching experience, passion for CUHK and achievements in scientific research, enabling the university to progress in various areas and contribute to our country and Hong Kong," Lau said.

The CUHK council will hold a special meeting today to decide on Lo's appointment. If three-quarters of the 34 council members support him, he will succeed Rocky Tuan Sung-chi, whose resignation takes effect in January.
