The National Day fireworks will return on October 1 after a five-year hiatus, alongside a wide range of festivities and activities to boost the night economy, says Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu.
The fireworks has been suspended since 2019 due to social unrest and the pandemic.
"The bright and colorful fireworks will once again light up Victoria Harbour to celebrate the 74th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China," Lee said before his first weekly council meeting after the summer break yesterday.
"We will also have a series of celebrations and promotional activities to revitalize the nights in Hong Kong."
Lee said Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po and his deputy Michael Wong Wai-lun have been hammering out the details on night activities in various districts, which could be announced next week.
He said Chan and Wong have heard suggestions, liaised with various sectors, and received positive responses.
"Many parties said they will participate actively. For example, a number of malls will hold various activities and launch discounts, as well as extend their business hours, to boost our night time economy again," Lee said.
The Tourism Board said it will organize a series of mega events, including night activities aimed at creating a citywide festive ambiance to entice visitors.
"For instance, the Wine and Dine Festival ... will take place at Central Harbourfront in October. The board will also stage Hong Kong WinterFest in November and Hong Kong New Year Countdown celebrations with a fireworks display at Victoria Harbour on New Year's Eve," the board said.
The Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners' Caspar Tsui Ying-wai said resuming the National Day fireworks can stimulate tourism, while hotels and restaurants near the harbor can attract visitors through promotional activities.
