A serious three-vehicle collision on Lantau Island on Tuesday evening left a taxi driver dead and 10 others injured, causing major traffic disruptions near Sunny Bay.
The accident occurred shortly before 8pm on Cheung Tung Road, involving a Discovery Bay bus, a truck and a taxi. The taxi's front end was severely crushed, leaving the driver unconscious and trapped inside the wreckage. He was freed by rescue personnel and rushed to North Lantau Hospital but was pronounced dead around 9pm.
Nine other people were injured, including a taxi passenger and eight bus passengers. They were taken to North Lantau Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. Cheung Tung Road in both directions near Sunny Bay was fully closed, along with the slow lane of the North Lantau Highway towards the airport.
