A 71-year-old tour bus driver died after reportedly losing consciousness behind the wheel, causing his vehicle to crash into a wall inside the Shing Mun Tunnel on Wednesday afternoon.
The bus, carrying 47 young children, was heading from Sha Tin to Tsing Yi when the incident occurred around 3.20pm. Dashcam footage showed the bus veering into the tunnel wall about five seconds after entering the tunnel, with brake lights not illuminated. The vehicle continued scraping along the roadside barrier for several hundred metres, emitting smoke before coming to a stop.
The driver, surnamed Lam, was found unconscious with no visible injuries and was rushed to Yan Chai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5.13pm. Initial reports indicated he had undergone angioplasty several years ago and had no history of smoking or drinking.
The children on board were not reported injured. Police are investigating the case and have appealed for witnesses to contact the New Territories South traffic unit at 3661 1344.
