A 64-year-old man died on Sunday after collapsing on a hiking trail at Plover Cove Reservoir in Tai Po, as Hong Kong recorded its highest temperature since records began in 1884.

Police received a report from hikers around 2pm that the man was found unconscious. The Government Flying Service was deployed to airlift him to hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The man, a Filipino holding a Hong Kong identity card, was wearing hiking gear and had a head injury. Blood was found on a nearby rock, but no signs of a struggle were detected. Police believe he had been dead for at least six hours before being found and are investigating whether heatstroke was a factor.
The Observatory issued a very hot weather warning, with temperatures reaching 36.9 degrees Celsius in the afternoon – the highest since 1884. Sheung Shui recorded 39.7 degrees, the highest ever recorded by the Observatory's automatic weather stations in Hong Kong.
