A 44-year-old local man was arrested in Cheung Chau on Wednesday for allegedly riding an electric bicycle illegally, police said.
Officers on patrol spotted the man riding an electric mobile tool on a road and stopped him for inspection. Following a preliminary investigation, the man was arrested on four charges: "driving an unregistered vehicle," "driving without a valid driving license," "using a vehicle without third-party insurance," and "riding without an approved protective helmet."
The suspected e-bike was also seized for investigation. The arrested man has been released on bail and must report back to police in early April.
Police reiterated that electric mobile tools are not suitable for use on roads, pavements, or cycle tracks alongside regular vehicles. Using unregistered and unlicensed electric devices on such routes may violate the Road Traffic Ordinance and other laws, with maximum penalties upon conviction of a HK$10,000 fine and 12 months' imprisonment.
