A Ugandan boy aged about four or five was allegedly left home alone in Sham Shui Po early on Wednesday, throwing toys from a window that smashed the windscreens of a parked BMW below, leading to his mother's arrest.
Police received reports around 12.10am of objects falling from a height at the junction of Tai Nan Street. A black BMW parked at the roadside had its front and rear windscreens shattered, with toys and packaging scattered on the ground.
Investigations revealed the boy was alone in a subdivided unit on the fifth floor of a tong lau building while his mother had gone out with another child aged about one. Believed to be distressed, the boy repeatedly threw toys from the window, striking the vehicle and causing the glass to burst.
Police took the mother and her two children to a police station for further investigation. The mother was arrested on suspicion of child neglect. No injuries were reported.
Footage captured by passers-by showed debris first hitting awnings and air conditioners of lower floors before crashing onto the black car, eliciting shocked reactions from witnesses.
