A 34-year-old network engineer has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than HK$20 million worth of cryptocurrency from clients of a Tsim Sha Tsui trading company.
Police received a report from the cryptocurrency trading firm at Concordia Plaza on Science Museum Road at around 5pm on Monday. A staff member suspected a colleague had stolen cryptocurrency valued at over HK$20 million from multiple clients.
Officers arrived and arrested a Choi surnamed man on suspicion of theft. He is the company's network engineer. The case is being handled by the Yau Tsim district criminal investigation team.
According to sources, the arrested engineer had worked at the company for four years, responsible for managing mobile apps. In early January, about 20 clients reported losing cryptocurrency. Calculations showed the clients lost a total of approximately 2.67 million Tether (USDT), equivalent to about HK$20.87 million.
An internal company investigation revealed the engineer had accessed the company database to check the affected clients' information, leading to his discovery.
