Passersby spotted the man struggling in the water, and a bystander immediately jumped in to help. The rescuer swam about 20 meters to pull the man ashore and performed CPR on the scene. The elderly man, who was reportedly unconscious, was later taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance.
Police said no suicide note was found, but the man is known to have medical issues. The case is being treated as an attempted suicide.
The rescuer, who sustained minor scrapes during the incident, said it was his first time saving someone from the water and added: “It’s nothing, it’s nothing!”
