A chapter is closing for the city's booklovers as the Eslite Bookstore in Tsim Sha Tsui announced its relocation within the district, ending a cherished 10-year era of tranquil reading corners with iconic harbour views.
The announcement followed online speculation after an online user shared that the branch would cease operations in the second quarter of 2026.
"Although it is only a relocation, finding another large space with a close-up harbour view is almost a mission impossible. It's a pity," the poster wrote.
Since opening on October 1, 2015, the Tsim Sha Tsui store at Star House has been a cultural staple with its blend of reading, creative design, and lifestyle elements set against the stunning backdrop of Victoria Harbour.
The relocation news has ignited speculation about the new place, with suggestions ranging from the former Sogo department store site to the now-closed Grand Ocean Cinema.
Despite differing opinions on the relocation, a common sentiment among the public was nostalgia for the store's unique atmosphere and its sea-view reading space in the urban landscape.
Many commenters reminisced about spending an entire afternoon there.
In response to Sing Tao Daily, the sister publication of The Standard, the store declined to comment for further details on the reasons for the relocation, the exact timeline, the new address, and whether the new store will retain harbour views, but assured that the information will be gradually released.
To express gratitude for a decade of support, the Tsim Sha Tsui store will offer an exclusive 12 percent discount on bookstore items from January 2 to February 28 with the purchase of two or more products.
