Residents of Sai Wan Estate in Kennedy Town have expressed mixed views about the government's redevelopment plan, with many supporting the move but concerned new flats may be smaller and less convenient for the elderly.
The government submitted a proposal to the Central and Western District Council on Tuesday, outlining the clearance and rehousing plan. Residents are expected to move into new public housing units on Ka Wai Man Road next to the estate in 2029.
Ninety-year-old Mrs Tam, who has lived there for decades, said the current estate is convenient but the new site is steep, which could be difficult for the elderly. She hopes lifts and other facilities will be added.

Ms Lo, a 20-year resident, supports redevelopment and likes the new site's "mountain-back, sea-facing" environment but worries the flat may be too small for her family of eight. She also noted the market is farther and children's commute may be longer.
Resident Mr Cheung also backs the plan, saying the estate is outdated, but hopes a shopping centre will be included and is concerned about reduced flat size.
Mr Chan, who learned about the plan from news reports, feels somewhat reluctant and thinks the 2029 relocation deadline is tight. He urged careful planning to meet residents' needs.
