The Most Venerable Jing Yin, the eighth Abbot of Po Lin Monastery passed away on Monday at age 62.
In a Facebook post, the monastery said the chairman of the Board of Directors had devoted more than four decades to monastic life and over 40 years to uphold Buddhist precepts.
It described his passing as a profound loss to the Buddhist community and expressed hopes that his compassion and vows would continue to inspire future generations.
Located at Ngong Ping on Lantau Island, Po Lin Monastery is one of Hong Kong’s most renowned Buddhist institutions and home to the Tian Tan Buddha, a landmark that draws visitors from around the world.
Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak Mei-kuen expressed sorrow, noting Jing Yin’s lifelong dedication to Buddhism, education and public service.
She highlighted his role since 2020 as a member of the Lamma Area Committee, “offering advice on the district’s development and environmental improvements. He made significant contributions, particularly in the conservation and promotion of traditional culture, with fruitful results.”
Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin also praised Jing Yin’s commitment to academic and cultural advancement, citing his leadership roles at several universities and Buddhist schools, such as his service as director of Centre of Buddhist Studies at the University of Hong Kong.
