Tram derails and mounts pavement in Shau Kei Wan, no injuries reported

A tram derailed and mounted the pavement on Monday afternoon in Shau Kei Wan, disrupting services but causing no injuries.

The incident occurred at around 1.18pm as the eastbound tram was making a right turn onto Shau Kei Wan Main Street East. The vehicle left the tracks and came to a stop after hitting a roadside guardrail.

Services between Sai Wan Ho Depot and the Shau Kei Wan Terminus were suspended for just over an hour while crews worked to clear the scene. A crane was deployed to lift the derailed tram back onto the tracks, and operations resumed at about 2.28pm.

Police said early findings suggested that sand or gravel lodged in the tracks may have contributed to the derailment, though investigations are ongoing.
