Chong Ka-yan and Julia Mibuy Mba Oyana each bagged a pair of tries as Hong Kong’s women’s rugby sevens team overturned a two-point halftime gap to overpower Shanghai 27-14 for their first group stage victory at the 15th National Games.
Shanghai struck first, less than two minutes in, for a 7-0 lead. Chong answered swiftly at the four-minute mark, though Jessica Ho Wai-on’s kick sailed wide, leaving the score 5-7 at the break.
The second half ignited early when Mibuy crossed at 1:52, only for Ho’s conversion to miss again, nudging Hong Kong ahead 10-7. Shanghai reclaimed the edge two minutes later, but Chong soared again at 5:19 to restore a 15-14 advantage despite another errant kick.
Chloe Chan extended the cushion with a try at 7:22, and Mibuy sealed the comeback with her second score moments later, finally capped by Ho’s successful conversion.
The 27-14 final handed Hong Kong a crucial first group-stage victory.
