The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) hoisted the Standby Signal No. 1 at 12.20pm on Monday, as Typhoon Fung‑wong entered within 800 kilometres of the territory.
Fung-wong is expected to maintain a distance of over 600 kilometers from Hong Kong today, and the T1 signal will remain in force before noon on Tuesday (Nov 11).
According to the latest forecast, Fung-wong is expected to turn northwards across the northeastern part of the South China Sea. The system is projected to be closest to Hong Kong by tomorrow night into Wednesday, skirting approximately 400 kilometres or more to the east of the territory.
Given the storm’s intensity, proximity and the local wind conditions, the Observatory warns that the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 may be considered at a later stage.
Under the combined influence of Fung-wong and the northeast monsoon, residents in Hong Kong are advised to expect windier and slightly cooler conditions in the coming days, with swells developing along the Guangdong coast and urban temperatures expected to dip to around 20 °C by mid-week. Minor flooding is also possible in low-lying coastal areas tonight and early tomorrow morning.
