As the nomination period for the Legislative Council General Election (LCGE) begins on Friday, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu stressed the importance of electing capable and responsible representatives to shape the city’s future.
Speaking at the LCGE kick-off ceremony this morning, the city leader stated that the improved electoral system has created a more comprehensive and balanced council that represents a wider diversity of views.
Lee reported that the current council has passed nearly 130 bills, including the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, Basic Housing Units Ordinance, and regulations governing ride-hailing services, marking a 60 percent increase over the previous term.
He added that the council has approved more than 260 development and livelihood-related projects, with a total funding of nearly HK$700 billion.
With Hong Kong at a turning point in advancing from stability to prosperity, Lee stressed the need to elect competent and dedicated representatives to examine and approve public policies.
For the upcoming election, Lee outlined the government’s three key priorities: ensuring electoral integrity, encouraging qualified candidates to run, and promoting voter turnout.
Lee also urged businesses to facilitate voting for employees, adding that the government would adjust civil service schedules to ensure orderly participation.
Echoing Lee’s remarks, Electoral Affairs Commission Chairman David Lok Kai-hong said the improved electoral system ensures broad representation, political inclusiveness, and balanced participation.
Highlighting the international reputation of Hong Kong’s elections for being open and fair, Lok believed that the current electoral system will foster a positive and high-quality election culture within society.
As corporate social responsibility gained greater attention, he also encouraged both public and private organizations to encourage staff to vote and to provide all feasible voting conveniences.
