The "Light Rail Ding Ding Fun" free ride day will be held on Monday's Mid-Autumn Festival, offering unlimited complimentary travel on light rail and tram services throughout the day.
Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki and MTR Hong Kong Transport Services Managing Director Jeny Yeung Mei-chun officiated at the launch ceremony on Sunday. Chan noted this marks the first extension of the free ride initiative beyond Hong Kong Island trams to include light rail services, benefiting more residents while enhancing social connectivity and demonstrating corporate social responsibility.
Chan emphasized light rail's importance for Northwest New Territories residents and trams' historical significance on Hong Kong Island. He referenced the Policy Address commitment to transport network improvements, including accelerated construction of Kwu Tung Station and Hung Shui Kiu Station for the Northern Metropolis development, plus advancement of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Railway connecting Hung Shui Kiu with Qianhai.
The MTR also arranged Strive and Rise Programme participants to visit depots on Saturday. Chan stated this provided firsthand understanding of various depot operations, job responsibilities, and corporate culture, helping youth develop workplace awareness and explore potential career interests.
