Hong Kong customs has uncovered a large-scale smuggling operation, seizing contraband worth approximately HK$140 million from two shipping containers bound for South Korea.
The seizure, which took place on August 26, included protected shark skins, liquor, medical equipment, and electronic goods.
The operation was launched following intelligence analysis and risk assessment, where oficials targeted two containers declared to be carrying LCD screens and electronic components.
During inspection, X-ray scans revealed unusual densities and shapes, prompting a physical examination.
Customs officers discovered more than 70 pallets of undeclared goods, including suspected scheduled shark skins, electronic components, alcoholic beverages, and medical equipment.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department confirmed that the seized shark skins are regulated under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance.
The consignment lacked required permits, leading to a further investigation into the smuggling of protected species, said Customs.
A limited quantity of declared goods, including LCD screens and electronic accessories such as cables and adapters, was also seized. Authorities believe smugglers attempted to conceal high-value illicit cargo behind a small number of legitimately declared items to avoid detection.
The origin and intended destination of the shipment are under investigation. Customs officials indicated that further arrests are anticipated as the investigation continues.
