A tragic accident occurred during a luxury train tour to Xinjiang, organized by Hong Kong-based travel agency TCI Travel, resulting in one death and three injuries.
The 18-day tour, which departed on August 27 with 20 participants, was on its sixth day when the incident happened on September 3.
The group, traveling to the scenic Jiuqu Shibawan area, had switched from a coach to smaller vehicles due to regional restrictions.
While stopped roadside after a tire blowout, one of the vehicles was struck by another car, causing the fatal crash.
Among the injured was a 74-year-old woman who suffered severe spinal injuries and was diagnosed with traumatic shock following a CT scan.
Medical professionals indicated a risk of secondary trauma, recommending urgent surgery on September 5.
Her family was notified and traveled to Xinjiang to make critical decisions about her treatment.
The other three injured travelers, from two families, are receiving medical care in local hospitals, accompanied by the Hong Kong tour leader.
All affected participants had purchased travel insurance.
The Travel Industry Authority, informed of the accident by the travel agency, promptly contacted Hong Kong’s Immigration Department and Xinjiang authorities to coordinate support.
The agency is working closely with the travel company to assist the victims and their families.
The travel agency dispatched additional staff to support the tour leader, while the remaining 16 tour members continued the itinerary with a local guide.
The authority expressed deep sorrow over the incident and pledged ongoing support for those affected, collaborating with law enforcement for further investigation.
The Travel Industry Council noted that the case is under investigation by the regulatory authority.
