A Hong Kong hiker remains in critical condition after falling from a slope near Mont Blanc in the French Alps on Sunday, August 24. The victim, identified as Sunny, was hiking in Chamonix when he collided with another falling climber and tumbled down the mountainside, sustaining severe head injuries.
Sunny's family initially launched an online fundraising campaign on Monday after French medical teams deemed surgical intervention too risky and quoted approximately US$270,000 (HK$2.1 million) for medical evacuation. However, within hours of appealing for public support, the family announced they had secured emergency medical transport arrangements and suspended further donations, expressing profound gratitude for the community's rapid response.
The Immigration Department confirmed providing consular assistance through the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong and the Chinese Consulate General in Lyon. Authorities are maintaining close contact with the family while offering appropriate support and guidance based on their preferences.
The department reminded overseas Hong Kong residents in need of assistance to contact their 24-hour hotline at (852) 1868 via various channels including WhatsApp, WeChat, or the official mobile application.
