Govt opposes slanderous remarks by foreign countries and media outlets on case of Jimmy Lai

The government on Wednesday strongly condemned some media outlets and organizations from Western countries for making erroneous slanderous statements and smears regarding the case of Jimmy Lai Chee-ying involving the Hong Kong National Security Law and the related custodial arrangements.

The government slammed that media outlets and organizations from Western countries have fully exposed their malicious intentions in undermining the rule of law in Hong Kong.

It noted that the relevant parties repeatedly "distorted the truth, blatantly discredited the judicial system and trials of the HKSAR, and fabricated information about the treatment provided to Lai Chee-ying during his custody."

The SAR said that Lai's actual legal representative has made a clarification, indicating that he is receiving appropriate treatment and care in prison. 

"This is an entirely despicable political manipulation," the statement noted, adding that the government opposes the groundless criticism and conclusion.
