The government officially gazetted the proposed Smart and Green Mass Transit System in East Kowloon (SGMTS-EK) on Friday under the Railways Ordinance, marking a key step forward in enhancing public transport connectivity in the city.
Spanning approximately 7 kilometers, the new transit line will feature nine stations, connecting MTR Choi Hung Station and Yau Tong Station. The route will pass through several key neighborhoods, including Choi Wan, Shun Lee, Shun On, Sau Mau Ping, Po Tat, Ma Yau Tong, and Lam Tin North, providing much-needed transport services to over 300,000 residents in Kwun Tong’s elevated areas.
A government spokesperson highlighted the project’s benefits, stating that the SGMTS-EK will offer efficient feeder services, significantly improving access to major MTR stations while reducing overall travel times. Depending on the final system design, the estimated journey from Po Tat to Yau Tong or Choi Hung will take just 10 to 15 minutes—cutting peak-hour travel durations by half compared to traditional road-based transport.
The government has already conducted extensive public consultations, engaging with Kwun Tong, Sai Kung, and Wong Tai Sin District Councils, as well as legislators, rural committees, and key stakeholders. With the scheme now published, construction is expected to commence shortly after authorization, targeting completion by 2033 or earlier.
Under the Railways Ordinance, members of the public have until August 19, 2025, to submit any objections to the proposed scheme. Additionally, individuals with compensable interests may file claims for compensation as stipulated by the ordinance.
For public reference, the full scheme and related plans are available for viewing on the Highways Department website. Hard copies can also be inspected during office hours at Home Affairs Enquiry Centers in Central & Western, Kwun Tong, Sai Kung, and Wong Tai Sin, as well as at the District Lands Offices in Kowloon East and Sai Kung. Those wishing to purchase copies may do so by contacting the Highways Department at 2762 3976.
The SGMTS-EK is poised to play a pivotal role in alleviating traffic congestion, promoting sustainable transit solutions, and unlocking the long-term development potential of East Kowloon.
