Two individuals have been found guilty of conspiring to pervert the course of justice at the Kowloon City Magistrates' Court on Monday afternoon by assisting the ex-husband of murdered socialite Abby Choi in fleeing Hong Kong.
The case, which has gripped the city, involves the brutal killing and dismemberment of Choi, the 28-year-old daughter-in-law of Tam Jai International co-founder's son, two years ago.
The defendants—41-year-old boat company employee Lam Shun and 29-year-old unemployed woman Irene Poon—were charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Prosecutors alleged that between February 24 and 25, 2023, the pair conspired with a woman named "Ivy" to help Choi's ex-husband, Kwong Kong-chi (also known as "Alex"), escape Hong Kong secretly without passing through immigration control.
During the trial, the prosecution argued that an agreement to assist Kwong was sufficient for conviction, even if no payment was finalized. The defense countered that no formal agreement was reached since no money was exchanged, and Poon merely acted as a messenger without knowing the full details of the plan.
Magistrate Chan Chi-fai delivered the guilty verdict at Kowloon City Magistrates' Court this afternoon.
Kwong Kong-chi, along with several others, is facing separate charges related to Choi's murder, which involved dismemberment and attempts to conceal the crime. The trial for the main murder suspects is ongoing.
