Hong Kong's cybersecurity authority has issued an urgent alert as fraudsters are expected to exploit the police's new electronic ticketing system, set to launch on June 15, in a fresh wave of sophisticated scams.
The Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) revealed alarming trends in its latest report released on Tuesday, showing a 67 percent year-on-year surge in cybersecurity incidents during the first quarter, with phishing scams involving fake websites jumping by 23 percent.
The report highlights that modern scammers have adopted more targeted approaches, often possessing detailed information about their victims.
It noted that cybercriminals are now creating what's known as "victim groups" on messaging platforms to establish false trust before striking. They're also capitalizing on trending topics, such as impersonating government services like the "HKeToll" electronic payment system, to make their schemes appear more convincing, it said.
With the imminent rollout of police e-tickets, HKCERT anticipates scammers will create counterfeit payment apps and distribute phishing links via SMS or email to harvest personal data.
"The electronic ticketing system, while convenient, presents a new opportunity for fraudsters to deceive the public," a HKCERT spokesman warned.
The center strongly advises residents to remain vigilant against suspicious payment requests and to verify all communications through official government channels.
