A recent survey found that more than 60 percent of grass-roots tenants believed that the government's proposed minimum space requirement of eight square meters for Basic Housing Units is still inadequate.
The Society for Community Organization interviewed 211 tenants living in subdivided flats, bed spaces, and cubicles. Of these, 67 percent expressed concern that insufficient living space would affect their children's development.
The organization suggested that the government calculate the per capita area for basic housing units and expand the definition of subdivided flats to include cubicles and bed spaces for regulation.
Furthermore, it urged the government to provide these tenants with relocation assistance and rental subsidies while cracking down on subdivided flats.
